Annual Trip to Lagoon

Kevin’s company has their summer picnic at Lagoon each year and we can get tickets for dirt cheap.  Kevin was feeling pretty ill the day of the picnic, so Novalie and I went.  I can go on only certain rides because I get horrible motion sickness now (something that has developed in the last few years) and I was noticing that Novalie was feeling kinda down having to go on rides by herself.  Times like this is when Novalie being an only child really tugs on my heart strings.  I asked her if she wanted to text her BFF and see if she could come to use Kevin’s ticket.  Luckily, she could and that made us both happy.

Before Kayla arrived, I let Novalie play those ridiculously rigged, expensive games.  She had her eye on this Hello Kitty cheetah print since she is in love with cheetahs lately and she collects Hello Kitty stuffed animals (what kind of stuffed animal does she not collect?…I mean really!).  She played 4 times in order to win it.  It was worth it for that thrill of winning a stuffed animal at an amusement park.

Fun, tame ride that you get wet on to cool off.

One thing that I was hoping with Kayla coming was that peer pressure would work in a positive way.  Novalie is not a daredevil when it comes to rides.  She did go on 4 different roller coasters, so it worked.  I kept telling her, just try the ride once and if you don’t like it you don’t ever have to go on it again and it will be over in 20 seconds!  All the rides she tried, she loved and went on over and over again.  Proud of her.

This picture is blurry, but let me just tell you about it.  That is Novalie and Kayla upside down in an airplane.  Upside down.  They talked about going on it and finally got in line towards the end of the night.  When it was their turn, Novalie turned to me and said, “I don’t want to do it!”  I told her to just try it and then it was time to load and she couldn’t turn back.  I was so (soooo) nervous for her.  I thought I was going to throw up and I couldn’t watch her go upside down.  I thought she was going to come off crying.  It seemed like the ride lasted an hour when really it was less than 2 minutes.  They came off (and survived) and they said, “WE LOVED IT!”  And you better believe they got in line to go again before they closed the ride for the night.  Phew.

Their favorite ride was this roller coaster called The Bat.  They went on it 5 times in a row at 10 pm because the ride operator let them when it was past closing time.  They didn’t want it to end!

They had so much fun and I had so much fun going on a few roller coasters with them before my balance was just too out of whack.  Then I super enjoyed watching them and was smiling and laughing at them the whole time.  Amusement parks are such a fun part of childhood.

They can’t wait to go again.

First Day of 6th Grade

Sixth Grade.

How did we get here?

Holy smokes, time flies.

Novalie loved the teacher she got.  It is the first time she has gotten a male teacher.  She was excited to start school.  She was excited to be the oldest grade in the school.  I think she was excited for structure and a schedule after the hectic summer we had.  I felt more ready to send her to 6th grade then any other grade so far.  Novalie grew so much last year and learned so many good important lessons that were very hard and she came out stronger.  My confidence in her is at an all time high.  I know she is going to have a great year!

Novalie has not let me touch her hair for a few months now, but she wanted me to do it on the first day.  I did it exactly how she told me to.  I love that she chose pigtails.  This is the outfit she picked out for her first day.  She looked adorable.

6th grade!

Super excited for the first day!

Super sad to say good-bye to summer vacation.

Olive was sad to see Novalie gone for a good part of the day.  She whined and whined when Novalie left.

Puppy kisses.

Celebrating the first day of 6th grade being over with Icees.

Novalie and her BFF not only survived the first day, but LOVED it!  Novalie loves her teacher, she thinks he is funny and nice and explains things really well.  I am so glad her first day went smooth and hope that tone carries through the whole year.

Back to School Mommy/Daughter Day

This is the 7th year Novalie and I have had our mommy/daughter back to school day.  It is a tradition that we both look forward to all summer.

Me and my baby girl ready to go.  ♥♥♥

First stop was Build-a-Bear.  Novalie collects Build-a-Bears and since we live close to one, it has been part of our tradition for 4 years now.  This year she chose a cute dog.  Sticking with the dog theme of the summer.

Lunch at Benihana’s.  Two of my favorite things, lunch with Novalie and eating at Benihana’s.  I grew up eating at Benihana’s for special occasions and I love that it is now a tradition for me to take Novalie there for special occasions.

We spent the rest of the afternoon shopping.  I don’t buy Novalie back to school clothes because one, it stays hot here until October so she can just wear all her summer clothes and two, she usually grows some in the first 2 months of school.  I do, however, let her pick out one new outfit for the first day of school outfit.  We went to a couple of different stores before she found just what she wanted.  She had to try the clothes on for the first time in the fitting room and it was hilarious to me that we are at that stage.  Novalie fell in love with these tennis shoes, but she needed a size 9 (a size 9!) so we had to go to 3 stores to find the right size.  She got some hot pink cheetah shoe laces to replace the laces.  She is into cheetahs right now.  Shopping for clothes and running around trying to find these shoes ate up the rest of our afternoon.

We had about 15 minutes before we had to pick up Kevin, so we ended our mommy/daughter day with Cherry Berry.  I never let Novalie get a big yogurt at Cherry Berry because those things are so dang expensive, but on mommy/daughter day she gets to.  And she was pleased as punch about that.

We ran out of time, so the next day we finished what was left on our list which was hair cuts and manicures.  Novalie’s BFF was over, so we took her along.

They were so happy about their pretty nails to start the first day of 6th grade!

I super love these days with Novalie.  Not only are we doing fun things that she loves, we talk.  We laugh, we sing along to music in the car.  We talk about our favorite summer moments.  We talk about what she is looking forward to in 6th grade and what she is nervous about.  It is just a perfect way for us to transition from summer vacation to a new school year.  It is such a fun tradition and I treasure these days.  It is crazy for me to think we only have 6 left before college.  What?  Crazy.  Makes me have to catch my breath and relish in the moment.  I love Novalie infinity times around the universe and back.  She is one of two loves of my life and I love spending time with her.

A Trip to the Zoo

Your #1 Fan post on September 21st, 2014

`I thought it would be fun to do one last activity before school started.  Marcus had been asking all summer if we could go to the zoo, so I thought that would be the perfect thing.  Thanks to my mom, we were able to make it happen.  Marcus LOVED the zoo.  All the kids did, actually me and my sister loved it too.  I don’t think you ever outgrow your love for the zoo.

The two lions were out and up and they were amazing.  They were roaring and it was interesting how much their abs contract when they roar.  At one point, one of the lions charged the second and leap frogged over it.  They were so much fun to watch.

Traditional picture on the seal we take each time we visit the zoo.  Same pose and all.  (If you couldn’t tell, Novalie went with a Rainbow Dash theme for this zoo visit.)

Posing (Danielle is really posing….ha!) with the elephant statue.  I am usually not funny, but I kept us laughing with my zoo commentary throughout our visit.  Complete with the zoo keeper creeper.

Rizzo was out!  Which made Novalie h~a~p~p~y!

We had a great time at the zoo!

My Birthday (and the Ogden Temple open house)

38 year old me.

I don’t find it necessary to celebrate my birthday.  I don’t like attention, so a day all about me?  No thanks!  But, it still happens each year.  This year as I was reserving tickets for the Ogden Temple open house, I thought what a perfect thing to do on my birthday.

The new Ogden Temple is beautiful, but I am sad they didn’t keep the round, original unique structure of the first temple.

I was so excited to take Novalie, the boys and Danielle through the temple.  I am so glad it happened.

To take Zach, who was just baptized, to see the baptistry where he can go in just 9 months to do baptisms for the dead was neat.  He loved it and it made him excited.  We invited the missionaries to come with us and the boys were pretty happy about that.

I know Danielle felt the spirit and had some special moments inside the temple.

Novalie loved the celestial room and had fun looking for the roses throughout the temple.

It was a special experience.  The beauty and peace inside the temple is breathtaking.

Novalie in front of the Ogden Temple.  Love.  (why, yes, novalie does have on bright colored tennis shoes.  thanks for noticing.  #pickyourbattles)

I love this picture!  Sweet Marcus with one of the missionaries jacket on.  It was hot, but he didn’t care.  He adores the missionaries and wants to be one when he grows up.

Let’s keep it real.  This is how Novalie felt at the end.  It was hot and she was done.   And when Novalie is done, she is d.o.n.e.  “You don’t even care about me at all!  All you care about is getting your stupid pictures!”  See.  Done.

After the temple, we headed to the ghetto water slides.  Nothing like celebrating being 38 by acting like a kid and water sliding.  And that is just what I did.

All I wanted for my birthday was to go to Café Rio.  My favorite.  My mom took everyone and it was delicious.  Delicious.

I wanted a raspberry pie instead of cake.  I made this pie super fast and I just threw in some sugar without measuring.  It was so tart.  Like hard to eat tart.  Darn it.  Next time I will measure for sure.

~Happy 38th to me!~
